Illegal System DLL Relocation error after installing Windows Updates

Posted: Monday 16 April 2007 by Marc Bradshaw

Some customers have reported to us that they are receiving an error similar to that below when booting their computer:

Illegal System DLL Relocation
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

Microsoft have confirmed that this error is caused by a software conflict and only affects PCs running Windows XP with Service Pack 2, and particular software. One of the items of affected software is Realtek HD Audio Control Panel which is installed on 90% of PCs that we have built.

This issue is not critical, your computer should continue to run without problems, though this error will continue to appear until the issue is resolved. There is an update available which solves the problem, and this can be obtained from the Microsoft Update website, or through automatic updates.

Further information on this issue is available from Microsoft Help and Support.
